Sujatha Baliga serves as the Executive Director of the Restorative Justice Project at Impact Justice, in Alameda County, California. Her background as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, criminal law attorney, and meditator inform her critical and revolutionary work in restorative justice today. Following a life-changing encounter with His Holiness the Dalai Lama who advised her to meditate and contemplate how she viewed her enemies, Baliga began a mindfulness meditation practice, which led her eventually to forgive her abuser, and then to become one of the leading voices and practitioners of Restorative Justice. In this interview, Baliga shares insights about her personal journey to forgiveness, the criminal legal system, the role of anger and truth-telling, and what restorative justice offers the world.
